Who's Driving Next To You?

Being protected with the right auto insurance doesn't have to be expensive

By Len Mosco – Licensed New Jersey insurance agent for over 30 years

As a child, when going on rather long road trips with my parents, I used to look at the different license plates on all the cars on the road as it helped pass the time. I used to enjoy looking at the different designs and colors on these license plates from the cars of various states. After spending 30 plus years in the insurance business I now look at the different state license plates in a different way.

New Jersey is one of only 20 states where Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist coverage is required.

With the economy being the way it is today, many drivers are picking the lowest limits of liability on their auto insurance in an attempt to save money. While there is some savings for selecting lower limits of liability and property damage coverage on your auto insurance, the savings is usually very small in comparison to the overall annual premium. We have no control over the limits of liability and property coverage that someone who is sharing the road with us has selected.

If my car is hit by another car in an accident am I subject to the protection of only the limits that they have chosen for their car insurance? The answer is Yes and No. If they have chosen lower limits of liability and you have not selected higher limits of Underinsured Motorist coverage on your own auto insurance policy then you would only have the protection limits that they have chosen as a maximum for their own auto insurance in other words, their liability limits would protect you as they were at fault in the accident.

New Jersey drivers are fortunate though to have mandatory Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage. Because of this, you will always have protection if you are hit by a driver who is "Under Insured".

As a New Jersey driver, making sure that your limits of Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist are adequate is very important. It is usually inexpensive to increase your liability and Uninsured and Underinsured coverages. By doing this, you can protect yourself if you are hit by a driver from another state, or New Jersey, that is Underinsured and does not have adequate coverage. It is always recommended to purchase the highest limits of liability and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage that you can afford.
